DESIRE

It’s all Julie Andrew’s fault. If she hadn’t started singing about whiskers on kittens or warm woollen mittens, not to mention bright copper kettles and packages tied up with string then my bet is that mass, global consumerism would never have seen the light of day!

Consumerism is an economic theory that states that excessive consumption of goods has a positive effect on the economy and that companies should create goods and services that consumers most desire.

However, there is a subtle difference between what we really “Need” and what we think we “Want”

Needs are fundamental requirements that a person must have to survive and maintain well-being, such as food, water and shelter, neglecting them can lead to illness or even death.

Wants, on the other hand, are desires for goods, services, or experiences that are not essential for survival. They are shaped by personal preferences, cultural influences or even the latest trends.Examples include luxury items, vacations, designer clothing, or the latest technology. Fulfilling wants can improve comfort, satisfaction, and quality of life, but they are not critical for basic survival.

Utilizing his trademark, rich, multi layered, photo based digital montages “Desire” is a body of work from artist JW Andrew created with the purpose of drawing attention to the mass, over consumption of enormous heaps of useless tat and hopefully make us question if we really need most of it. Then again, what would the millions of Chinese schoolchildren who make the goods on sale in the middle aisle of Aldi do with all that free time!!

Aesthetically, the images are influenced by a wide, eclectic mix of contemporary styles and creatives including the mixed media, photo based artworks of artist Cindy Dominguez, the quirky, digital collages of Duane Toops and the freestyle typography of legendary, graphic designer David Carson.

All of these unique "Desire" images are available to own as limited edition, Giclee prints on museum grade, Hahnemuhle rag paper. Images are supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
